Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar
Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar proves that Southern creole food is way ahead of the game. The Gullah are descendants of enslaved Central and West African people who carved out a unique identity in the lowcountry of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. From a cozy Atlanta home, Virgil’s is keeping the culture alive. The restaurant takes its name from the owners’s father and father-in-law, whose family recipes inspire every dish on the menu. Lively and fiiine, treat yourself to a menu of Southern favorites that draw on African influences while bringing just the right amount of extra, from “Bussin’ Corn Muffins” made with sweet potato puree to crab rice and “Fried Lobsta Tail.” Try anything From Da Yard and Watuh— “Fried Poke Chop,” “Sammen,” or even “Jam Up Wingz.” And how we wrote it is exactly how you’ll see it on the menu, because thanks to Chefs Gee and Juan Smalls, no part of the culture is left out, not even the dialect.
