Ajo Y Oregano

I’ve never waited an hour for food (I start protesting at 45mins). Add in that this particular wait happened in the early afternoon, on a weekday, on White Plains Road in the Bronx…well, if someone had told me what I was about to go through, I would have thought they were lying. But now I know—when it comes to Ajo Y Oregano, chances are you’re going to wait. It’s not just an incredibly popular spot with locals, but also a physically small one. When you’re seated you’ll be all up in someone else’s business, taking in every waft of their delicious smelling food. With the quantity of Latin restaurants in the Bronx, it’s possible for quality control to take a huge dip. But with this spot, there’s nothing to worry about—the food is consistently amazing. Like all the best Dominican restaurants, you can walk up to a window with an oversized sneeze guard and ask the ladies behind the counter to fill up your aluminum takeout dish with delicious rice, beans, and fried pork, or choose to dine-in and taste succulent beef stew or incredibly tasty mofongo. This isn’t a fancy spot to go to, but it is the ideal place to get yourself a hearty lunch and a couple of cervezas.
