Owner Josh Montalvo opened up his Colombian restaurant in the Morris Park section of the Bronx with a few things in mind. One of the most important ones was to offer vegan options while not sacrificing any Colombian flavors. What I love about the BX food scene is that the local spots – the ones with the customers who keep coming back and back and back again – are the ones where you really find the best the borough has to offer. Delicious, eclectic, and authentic food is everywhere in the borough, and La Masa is no exception. One of their most delicious offerings is their cilantro lime chicken, a tasty dish of roasted chicken marinated in lime and cilantro and served with rice, black beans, sweet plantains, and a salad. The chicken is some of the juiciest I’ve had and the flavor leaves nothing to be desired. Other standouts include their mushroom, onions, and eggplant empanadas and vegan patacon (a giant fried plantain) with mixed greens and vegan cheese. But if there was one dish that I was truly impressed by, it was their Portobello Mushroom Burger. One of the TASTIEST and HEARTIEST meatless burgers I’ve ever had. La Masa is another labor of love where you can feel the importance of family & culture in every corner of this unassuming restaurant.
