Word Up Cafe
Founded by a school librarian who realized her students needed more spaces to express themselves, Word Up Cafe invites event-planners looking to feed both stomach and spirit. With Afrocentric artwork and bohemian purple and yellow walls, the cafe curates a nonconformist vibe through and through. Entrees feature health conscious cuisine such as the black bean burger, smoothies with spirulina, and herbal teas, while spoken word, poetry, and live musical performances empower the Black spirit. After six years as a pillar of the community, Word Up has recently shifted to an events only space to cope with the impact of the pandemic. Having visited the cafe in its prime, we know there’s no better place to host your meetings, workshops, baby showers, and poetry slams. They also host a trauma informed parent support forum every Monday at 7pm, for folks struggling with the conflict, fatigue, and parenting through covid. We’d also point you to their GoFundMe, where you can chip in for the full reopen of a unique and valuable community space.
